How much has health insurance cost increased up to 2021? According to a new government report of health insurance trends, the total Single premium went up 3.2% (from $7,149 to $7,380) for private company employees in 2021. See figure 6 for breakouts by small, medium and large employers. Employee-plus-one rates went up 3.1% to $14,634 on average (figure 7). Family rates went up 3.0% on average to a total premium cost of $21,381.  Figure 9 shows the average cost increase every year, since 2009. Trends in average deductibles are shown in figures 14 and 15. The average annual deductible for single employee coverage in a private company was $2,004 in 2021 (up 3%). However, for small size companies with less than 50 workers, the average deductible cost was $2,485. Other charts show how much employees contribute to the annual premiums.
