Newsweek ranks the top 250 best hospitals in the world for 2023. Newsweek calls this list the “World’s Best Hospitals”. The top 4 are in the US (in order): Mayo Clinic (Rochester, MN), Cleveland Clinic, Massachusetts General Hospital and Johns Hopkins in Baltimore. Toronto General in Canada and UCLA Health – Ronald Reagan Medical Center in Los Angeles are also within the top 10 world hospitals. Altogether, there were about 45 US hospitals in the top 250. The rankings are based on recommendations from medical professionals (weighted 54%), results from patient satisfaction surveys (14.5%), hospital quality measures (29%) and a new category “PROMs” implementation (2.5%). PROMs are Patient-Reported Outcomes Measures, a new way to measure how their condition improved from the patient’s perspective.
For the United States, quality measures mirror the CMS methodology for hospital Star Ratings. Most measures are from 2019 or 2020 data (as of October 2022 Star Ratings). The Patient Satisfaction survey numbers are from 2021. Published March 2023.
