Prescription Drug Advertising and Health Reform

Research by Kantar Media tracks drug advertising by pharmaceutical companies “Big Pharma”. It’s big business at nearly $6.9 billion in 2021 ad spending direct-t0-consumers. At the top of 2021’s spending list was Dupixent (by Sanofi and Regeneron) for atopic dermatitis.  That was followed by Novo Nordisk’s Rybelsus (diabetes). Next in order: AbbVie’s anti-inflamatory drug Humira and Rinvoq, a rheumatoid arthritis drug. Fifth was Trulicity, made by Eli Lilly (diabetes). The size of ad spending to consumers raises questions about the disadvantages of the US continuing to allow direct-to-consumer advertising of prescription drugs. Published April 2022.  The spending level for 2021 equates to big pharma spending almost $19 Million every day to promote prescription drugs to consumers.
