Federal agency HRSA projects supply and demand for primary care physicians to the year 2035. The projected shortage in primary care doctors is over 14,000 practitioners by 2035. Nurse Practitioners (NPs) and Physician Assistants (PAs) are counted in the projections. This report is a high level overview, that shows demand continues to outstrip supply. An older 2016 report discusses ways NPs can manage 80 to 90 percent of care provided by primary care physicians such as, take medical histories, conduct exams, order and interpret tests, develop treatment plans, and provide preventive care. HRSA is the Health Resources and Services Administration agency. Dashboard updated August 2022.
