School crime and safety indicators for 2020. These are the official statistics and conclusions by the US Department of Education’s Institute of Education Sciences (National Center for Education Statistics). Discusses opioid use, bullying, violent incidents and more.  The report notes that during the 2017-18 school year, 80 percent of public schools reported that one or more incidents of violence, theft, or other crimes had taken place, amounting to 1.4 million crimes. During the same school year, almost half of schools (47%) reported one or more of the specified crimes to the police, amounting to 442,800 crimes. The rate of victimizations (i.e., thefts and nonfatal violent victimizations) at school was 30 crimes per 1,000 students enrolled in 2019. Published July 2022.
