Consumer Demand for Clinical Quality: The Giant Awakens (Classic)

“The Giant Awakens” is a classic report that addresses consumer demand for clinical quality. This report by VHA (now Vizient) was truly one of the most remarkable research reports in the field of consumers and healthcare quality. Given its date (2000 Research Series), it could be considered a ground-breaking classic. Although performance has improved in many areas since 2000, more leaders reading this report and asking some tough questions, can only help organizations improve at a faster rate. Healthy People 2020 – Goals

Healthy People 2020 is the US government’s set of national goals to prevent disease and promote health. There are hundreds of objectives in 42 areas, including Cancer, Physical Activity, Diabetes, Nutrition and Weight, Tobacco Use, Substance Abuse, Sexually Transmitted Diseases, Immunizations, Chronic Kidney Disease and more. New topics & goals for genomics, global health, dementia/Alzheimer’s, adolescents, older adults, preparedness, sleep, healthcare-associated infections and others. Interesting objective is to reduce the number of measles cases from the baseline of 115 (2008) to 30 by 2020.  For the most recent full year 2019, the CDC reports 1,282 cases of measles, the highest in 10 years. This is due to outbreaks in unvaccinated populations. (See data at ). The Healthy People 2020 goals show data only through 2017 or 2018; the goal is adjusted to count only “US-acquired cases”. Influenza vaccination data and goals are also included in this set.
