Baby-Friendly Hospitals (breast-feeding)

The Baby-Friendly Hospital Initiative is a global program sponsored by the World Health Organization (WHO) and the United Nations Children’s Fund (UNICEF) to encourage and recognize hospitals and birthing centers that offer an optimal level of care for lactation. As of October 2021, there were reportedly 500 to 600 hospitals in the US & Puerto Rico who met the program criteria, which are based on Ten Steps to Successful Breastfeeding.

Bariatric Surgery Centers of Excellence – Locate a Center & Bariatric Surgeon

Locate a Bariatric Surgery Center of Excellence or bariatric surgeon. Surgical Review Corporation (SRC) has designated hundreds of hospitals and surgeons, as Metabolic and Bariatric Surgery Centers of Excellence. Minimum volume is 80 cases per year for a Center of Excellence, and 50 cases per year, and 125 cases in a lifetime, for a Surgeon of Excellence. SRC is a non-profit corporation representing bariatric surgeons. It promotes high standards of care in weight loss surgery. This birthing directory identifies birth centers accredited by the Commission for the Accreditation of Birth Centers (CABC). Standards are set by the American Association of Birth Centers (AABC). Birthing centers practice midwifery (midwives) and take a wellness and holistic approach to pregnancy and maternity care.

Accreditation of a cancer center is based on ability to comply with established CoC standards.

The problem was repeated in the 2022 rankings. Read carefully and look at the details.

Joint Commission Disease-Specific Care – Certified Hospitals helps you find hospitals that have achieved Advanced Certification in any of about 17 programs. Advanced certification in stroke care (Primary Stroke Centers or two other stroke designations) is the most common. Other advanced certification programs are in palliative care, hip and knee, heart attack, heart failure, inpatient diabetes, perinatal services, COPD, ventricular assist devices, and other small programs in the US. Many are listed as having Advanced programs. Other types of certification may be available. The Joint Commission is the leading accrediting body for hospitals.

Palliative care specializes in the relief of the pain, symptoms and stress of serious illness; it can be provided along with curative treatment.

CARF offers the ability to do an online search for accredited facilities with specific rehab programs you may be interested in. Select Program Focus to search for Addictions, Brain Injury, Mental Health, Opioids, Spinal Cord, Stroke Specialty Services, and more. Choose Age Group to search for older adult focus. Trauma Programs: Verified Trauma Centers (ACS)

Find hospital trauma programs that are Verified Trauma Centers by ACS. Level I, II and III Trauma Centers are listed here, by state (and other international locations), at the American College of Surgeons’ (ACS) website. Trauma Center designation is a voluntary process that hospitals may choose to pursue for Adult and/or Pediatric care. Level I is the highest level of five levels. A description of what’s expected to be available at each level can be found at www.amtrauma.org.
